With the proper tools, the prevention and management of L/LD is a welcomed reality. At the Wellington-Alexander Center, we focus on identifying and addressing learning difficulties early. Since warning signs may present in children as young as 2 1/2 years, we offer brief screening tests to identify any possible at-risk indicators.
If a child is identified as being at-risk, a comprehensive evaluation will assess the child's strengths and weaknesses. This is needed in order to plan the appropriate prevention and intervention program.
A recent study by Torgesen, which was funded by the National Institute of Health, showed that 2/3 of young students identified as being at risk for reading difficulties were able to achieve average or above average reading ability when they received help early. By creating a solid foundation early, your child will have the necessary tools to manage his or her L/LD through college and into adult life.
The Wellington-Alexander Center's program differs from other prevention programs.
Our treatment is:
Comprehensive
- Strengthens and solidifies the foundation of learning in all areas of development (Language, Sensorimotor, Attention, Behavior)
- Treatment is delivered on a daily basis; your child can acquire skills in weeks versus months
- Parents receive training to learn techniques that will help their child
Interdisciplinary
- Professionals from many disciplines (speech-language, occupational therapy, psychology and pediatrics) are available to work together
- The MD is an integral part of the evaluation and treatment teams; this neurological expertise ensures that all aspects of neurodevelopment are being considered
Individualized
- Each child is treated with an individualized program that is adjusted on a daily basis
- Programs are adjusted daily to fit the needs of each child
- The team meets weekly to staff each patient and make adjustments to treatment plans as needed
Preemptive
- Your child's difficulties are not going to go away on their own
- Through early intervention, skills necessary to achieve academic success are acquired
