Addressing the Medical & Behavioral Components

It is not uncommon to find attention difficulties creating additional problems for individuals with L/LD. These issues are most often evidenced by:

  • low stamina for routine tasks
  • inattention and fading occuring earlier than expected

These difficulties are especially evident when doing work that requires language processing.

To address these attention issues, an MD must carefully assess the individual before treatment begins.  Individuals are monitored and rated (with respect to attention) at the conclusion of each therapy hour.
Non-pharmacological measures (such as game breaks, physical activity, et cetera) designed to maximize attention and arousal are integrated into each therapy session. However, if necessary, medication may be appropriate.

All individuals have the goal of developing good working behavior. This goal is reinforced every hour for appropriate behavior in the areas of:

  • Listening
  • Being respectful
  • Being positive
  • Doing what has been asked
  • Doing the best work possible

Families are shown behavior management techniques as they learn and understand how their child’s brain processes information. Should an individual experience emotional or behavioral difficulties requiring more individual counseling, we may recommend that your child see a consulting psychologist.

If your child already has a regular pediatrician and/or psychologist that you are most comfortable with, coordination and communication with your MD and psychologist is an essential component of our treatment.
